August 2, 2019: A VOLUNTARY YEAR (OT: DAS FREIWILLIGE JAHR) by Ulrich Köhler and Henner Winckler is the only German production to be shown in the Concorso internazionale competition of the Locarno Film Festival. The film thus enters the race for the Pardo d’oro.

A Sutor Kolonko production commissioned by Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR)
Jette is on her way to the airport to start a voluntary social year in Central America. Her father Urs wants her to lead a free, self-determined life and not to get stuck in the West German province like he did. But Jette is torn between her childhood love Mario and her father’s expectations. She can no longer avoid the question of what she wants herself.
Ulrich Köhler studied Fine Arts in Quimper, France, philosophy in Hamburg, Germany and later Visual Communication at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg. His feature films ”Bungalow” and ”Windows on Monday” premiered at Berlinale and screened at many festivals worldwide, winning national and international awards. His movie ”Sleeping Sickness” premiered in Competition at Berlinale and won the Silver Bear for Best Directing. „In my Room“ (2018) celebrated its premiere in the official program of the Cannes Film Festival Un certain regard.
Henner Winckler studied visual communication and film at the University of Art and Design Offenbach and the University of Fine Arts Hamburg. He taught filmmaking at the Film and Television University „Konrad Wolf“ Potsdam-Babelsberg and at the Met Film School Berlin. His feature films „Klassenfahrt“ (2001), and „Lucy“ (2006) were shown at numerous festivals (Forum/Berlinale, London Film Festival, Karlovy Vary…) and won international awards and critical acclaim.
ProductionSutor Kolonko develops and produces challenging documentaries and feature films for an international audience. Founded in May 2010, Sutor Kolonko provides a platform especially for young writers and directors. A VOLUNTARY YEAR marks Sutor Kolonko’s return to Locarno, where in 2017 they won the Pardo d’oro of the Cineasti del presente section with „3/4“, the feature film debut of director Ilian Metev.
